What My Parents Did Right

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

I just realized with a smile that the best thing my parents probably did in my upbringing
Was to shower me with books and encourage me to read.
Show me the possibilities of storytelling, language, and thought.

Thanks Guys. :)

Pleasure Reading

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Light, airy head
Sharp, cool breath through nostrils
Wide eyes
Wide as the size of your face
Letters are translated from shapes to sensation
They swim through your eyes
Making your head even lighter

My Ideal Array of Belongings

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

A small one bedroom apartment.
A computer.
A bed.
Some dress shirts.
Some pants. And a belt.
A few tees and shorts.
A subscription to The New York Times.
A subscription to The New Yorker.
My Twitter account that keeps additional tabs on Slate, Salon, and The Atlantic.
A membership to a gym.
A membership to an MMA gym.
Post-it notes and pens.

Maybe that’s all I’ll need.

Last.FM Numerical Milestones

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

A rather arbitrary list, as the music scrobbled on Last.FM does not altogether reflect the actual musical milestones in my life. After all, it would be rather impossible to measure the actual musical milestones of my life. First song I ever listened to? Probably some traditional Chinese tune while I was in my mother’s womb. My actual 10,000 song? Probably something crass, like Limp Bizkit’s “Nookie.”

Anyhow, the list:

Judging but what I’ve listened to most over the years, this list is not surprising. Probability is never surprising. A lot of the milestone tracks are songs I have on loop all the time.

I am rather surprised that my first scrobbled song was an Avi Buffalo track, given that I seem to have never listened to them again. I am also rather disappointed that my 5000th track was by Magic Man, given my mediocre experience with directing music videos.

So quite the arbitrary list, yeah. But aren’t all milestones somewhat arbitrary? Who decided that 25 year increments would be so special? Our five-fingered hands?
